MORE ABOUT THE SOUNDTRACK FOR THE NEW 2008 SPECIAL EDITION RELEASE

THE 2008 Special Edition features IMPROVED SOUND QUALITY,
correcting sound anomalies which were evident on the previous
2006 limited release version.

Saga of a Crew has been totally re-edited for this 2008 Special Edition. Several hundred
digital trim edits were made at the locations of splicing on the 1980s filmstrip which
removed the corresponding sound 'blips'. Also, a new configuration for connecting the
original projector audio outputs to the digital camera was incorporated which greatly
reduced or completely eliminated projector motor sibilance as was evident with the 2006
DVD.

Other improvements to the sound quality were achieved by muting the music sound track
used on the 1980s film strip, Anton Bruckner's 5th Symphony.  A good portion of the music
utilized was over-recorded, making some dialogue challenging to understand. With that
music removed or replaced, sound levels of much of the spoken dialogue could be
reduced to a more nominal level, which helped with the overall sound quality by reduction
of camera motor noise. The original choice in 1984 to employ the recording of Bruckner's
5th Symphony was not ideal. This exquisite  composition is mighty in scope and emotion
and is greatly admired by Saga of a Crew's Producer. Although fitting for certain scenes in
the film,  the music seemed at other times an overstatement (in regards to the music's
compatibility with the scenes it accompanied)  Also,  the film could not be distributed in
many countries due to the strict terms of the music license. This compromise had been
deeply regretted by the Producer whom had hoped for wider distribution of Saga of a
Crew. Hence, removal of the Bruckner music assisted with sound quality, dramatic effect,
and distribution potential for the film, as well as affording the opportunity to breath new
life into the film with a totally new original motion picture soundtrack!  During the month of
March 2008 writer, producer, director Daniel R. Christopher proceeded to compose and
record the new soundtrack recordings. According to Christopher "I  utilized a 20 minute
'piano concerto' I composed and recorded in the mid 1980s as the basis for the new theme
and some of the incidental music. Parts of that old piano work were expanded and
reworked." Christopher also borrowed from some of his many other tunes composed over
the years and the resulting music track is at times atmospheric, haunting, and subdued,
but does seem to fit the film erringly well.

Perhaps the most painstaking of all the sound editing remedies was the 'micro editing' as it
was called, of most audio portions of the 1980s scenes, especially on-location footage. The
volume envelope was reduced between each spoken word to a very tight tolerance which
largely improved sound quality with these exterior scenes where microphone wind noise
was sometimes present and most noticeable at gaps in recorded audio such as
conversation. This technique at times produces a result which may remind one of a very
slight voice activated microphone effect, but this result is a welcome alternative and a
substantial improvement when compared to the 2006 version!  The technique could not be
applied to every scene however, for example the opening hall meeting scene where hall
motors are heard, or the 'pressure control' sewage pump station scenes where
intentionally loud turbine motors ran while the actors raised their voices. If employed for
such scenes the varying volume envelope would be too distracting.

Another audio curiosity were the 'crickets in space' heard occasionally on the 2006 DVD.
Members of the production team were also reptile keepers and the crickets sometimes
heard were the reptile's food source stored in plastic tubs some distance away from the
film sets, but not distant enough from the scrutinizing microphone. Sound dubbing was
used for the 2008 DVD where possible to eliminate this but a few crickets still remain. They
are not too obtrusive, and when they do occur they could almost pass for electronic beeps
for some of the space craft apparatus. Overall, SAGA OF A CREW 2008 Special Edition, now
having been greatly improved in regards to audio quality and with additional enhanced
effects and performances added, offers viewers a new science fiction viewing experience!
